Recurving Typhoons Reinforce Eastern US Cold Next 2 Weeks!

The -NAO/AO is one thing, even more so now is the flip in the PNA to positive which adjusts the upper pattern across North America BUT the re-curve of the west Pacific typhoons is also playing a significant role in driving ARCTIC air into the Lower 48.

Today saw the first accumulating snowfall in Denver as well as points east into Kansas. In fact we saw an impressive 6 inches over parts of west Kansas today.

Check out this great shot out of Goodland, KS from Joe Moore (@wxjoe), taken early this morning.

The snowfall is all thanks to a system riding east out of the Central Rockies which is carving out the trough that’s driving cold south.

Here’s the upper pattern off the GFS tonight and you can see the fairly significant trough with cold drilling all the way into Texas where it’s already 32 degrees at Amarillo.

Projected low by tomorrow morning. 20s are likely all the way to the Texas Panhandle.

Tonight and tomorrow that system pushes ENE and here’s the surface chart.

The GFS shows a decent swath of snow through Kansas.

Check out the next 24 hours, it shows a snow swath from Wichita where they’ve already seen a measurable snow today (could be a record for so early), all the way to Detroit.

A new clipper system drops out of Canada Sun-Mon and this looks to bring a decent early season snowstorm to Minnesota and Wisconsin. Should see accumulation down to Minneapolis and it may even snow in Chicago too.

Yes, it is rather early for all this!

Now, we have of course been watching the west Pacific typhoons. We just saw Wipha slam Japan before racing off to the NNE. That very system is going to help reinforce an even deeper trough than what we have now, over the Eastern half of North America. Here’s Wipha’s track.

That system along will aid in pumping the western ridge and driving very cold air into unusually far south locales over the United States.

Check out these numbers according to the GFS for next week.

We could see 20s well into the Ohio Valley, even down to the southern Appalachians. The first 32 degree low in NYC and Philly, even Atlanta with this outbreak.

Check out the 6-10 day temps off the CPC.

Of course we’re now watching Super Typhoon Francisco which will likely impact Japan mid next week.

Here’s the track from the JTWC.

This thing too will recurve meaning more cold into the Eastern US after next week’s outbreak.

8-14 day off the CPC.
