It’s been a truly historic opening week to April 2018. In fact there’s never been a colder start (in recorded history) for many cities in the Dakotas and Minnesota and for others, including Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana and Ohio, the coldest in at least 80 years.
Amazing to see 20 to 25 below normal for a full week.

April 1st through 9th has been the coldest first 9 days of April on record in the Twin Cities. In contrast, April 1st through 9th of last year was the 8th warmest on record! What a difference a year makes… #mnwx pic.twitter.com/XBQYT4mHsu

So how do you prefer starting your April? 2018 (cold)…or 2012 (the exact opposite!)? pic.twitter.com/bZsBmKnryi

With an average temperature of just 22.9, the first week of April just barely snuck under April of 1936 for coldest start to the month on record in the Twin Cities. So how did the summer of 1936 turnout? July of 36 is still easily the hottest month ever observed… #mnwx pic.twitter.com/E6DTqeQkEV

Maxes today. Some locations in the lower 10s in early April is a testament to the cold. As cold as this area has experienced since 1870s this late in season. pic.twitter.com/e4Ph9v9Jwh

Record lows were shattered this morning across the area with temperatures falling to the single digits either side of zero.
Aberdeen at -6° set an all-time April low. Previous was -2° on 4/3/1975.
Pierre at 0° set an all-time April low. Previous was 1° on 4/1/1936. pic.twitter.com/dmQyUWF8RF— NWS Aberdeen (@NWSAberdeen) April 4, 2018

The first 9 days of April 2018 have been the coldest on record for Fargo, ND. It's always good to best records from "The Long Winter" of 1880-1881. #sarcasm pic.twitter.com/iveHwUbUPd

First 10 days of April since 1881. No trend in temperatures, but typical year to year fluctuations. Coldest 2 years are the first and the last years. (1881 and 2018) pic.twitter.com/Z6AosrKps0

If many of you felt like the first 1/3 of this April was the coldest start to April in your lifetime, it was! 1st 10 days of April 2018 will go down as the coldest 1st 10 days of April on record in #Rockford & tied for 2nd coldest 1st 10 days of April on record in #Chicago. #ilwx pic.twitter.com/crLBZfna4s

Yet another ridiculous stat that underscores the persistence of this late season chill. Only twice before in recorded history since 1871 (and not since 1916) have 4 consecutive sub-40 deg days occurred this late in the season. @NWSChicago @WGNNews pic.twitter.com/w4wSk5Pb2S
