The upcoming bank holiday weekend is looking good thanks to a ridge of high pressure building in from the west. This will settle the weather down providing plenty of sunshine and with light winds, you’ll notice the warmth.

Tonight will be clear and cold for the time of year. Towns and cities should fall towards 3-4C, perhaps 1-2C in rural areas with -2C possible over the Highlands.

Sunny and warming up Saturday with highs widely into the very pleasant 16-18C range, perhaps 21C for such areas as Aboyne. The NW Highlands and Western Isles will be cooler, somewhat breezier and cloudy with outbreaks of rain due to a nearby front.

Clear and cold again tomorrow night for much of the mainland with mist, even light frost possible in sheltered areas but clouds will encroach from the west later into Sunday morning.

A somewhat cloudier looking day Sunday but we may see sunny spells into the afternoon. Again, with enough sunshine and light winds, temperatures warm nicely to between 14-17C.

Into Monday and an Atlantic front spreads wind and rain across the country with a fresh to strong SSW wind. Cooler than Sat-Sun.

England

Parts of Eastern England didn’t see the temperatures get much past 6-7C which is quite amazing for this late into May. Today would be more suited to JANUARY and not late May. Factor in grey, laden skies, a strong, cold wind and the only resemblance of May today was trees in full bloom. It was warmer in the sunnier skies over more western and northern England this afternoon.

High pressure is thankfully building in for the bank holiday weekend and this heralds a fine, dry and sunny next few days with much warmer temperatures.

Through tonight and skies clear out and that means cold with even the chance of some rural grass frost by night but the warmth from the sunshine by day should lift temperatures into the mid-10s tomorrow with perhaps a 16 or 17C over parts of the Midlands and North, maybe a touch cooler towards London. The chilly East should see highs nearly double what they were today thanks to lighter winds and sunshine.

Sunday will be a near repeat of tomorrow although we may see more in the way of sunshine rather than that sun-cloud mix. Highs shall respond nicely to the strong late May sun with highs widely into the 16-18C range.

Another cool night Sunday into Monday but it’s all change during Monday as a front swings into NW’estern areas. Cloud, rain and an increasing SW wind will be dominant and this boundary will spread east through the day, although eastern parts should see another fine, dry and sunny day with highs perhaps approaching 21C over parts of Lincolnshire into East Anglia.

Wales

After a mixed bag of weather today with some sunshine but also some heavy, thundery showers and a stiff NE breeze making it feel chilly, we have a fine, dry and settled bank holiday weekend coming up.

Starting with tonight, expect clear skies, light winds and a cold one with towns and cities dipping to 3-5C, nearer 1-3C in the countryside with frost possible.

Saturday is looking very good with plenty of late May sunshine and with light winds, surface temperatures will respond very well with highs widely reaching 15-17C away from the coast.

Tomorrow night will be a near repeat of tonight with clear skies and light winds.

Sunday should be another mainly sunny day but later into the afternoon expect clouds to increase in the west as this signals change and the approach of an Atlantic frontal system.

Monday will be a very different day compared to Saturday and Sunday as wind, rain and cooler temperatures take hold.

Northern Ireland

It should be a pleasant and sunny end to your day with clearing skies. That heralds a chilly night, particularly from Antrim to Down as lows away from urban areas dip towards 1-2C with cold spots such as Katesbridge perhaps hitting 0C.

Western parts will see clouds increase with even a chance for light rain or drizzle so not as cold here.

Through Saturday and the best of the sunshine will be in the east where highs may top 17C. Always cloudier in the west and although cooler, it won’t be too bad at 14 or 15C.

A dull, damp start to Sunday but I am optimistic that skies brighten through the day and with sunshine appearing, highs may push 16 or 17C quite widely.

By Monday we see a very different day with plenty of wind, rain and cooler temperatures.

Ireland

A fine end to your Friday across much of Ireland with lots of sunshine. Through tonight and skies clear out, this will allow for a cold late May night with frost possible over parts of the Midlands. Always that bit cloudier with a touch of dampness in the west.

Saturday will see a west-east split with the best of the sunshine over eastern parts where highs may push 17 or 18C, always cooler, cloudier with some dampness over western parts,

Sunday should see a lot of cloud but through the day, eastern parts should see skies turn bright or sunny and that should allow temperatures to respond back to values we can expect tomorrow.

By Monday wind, rain and cooler weather moves in from the Atlantic.
