Fresh Atlantic air will be welcomed with open arms across France, SE England this week

Low 30s for England and mid 30s for France and low 40s for Iberia persist. With the exceptions of Iberia, this summer is turning out to be a relentless for heat.

However for those sweating in southern England and much of France, there is very welcome relief on it’s way, we just need to get through the next 36 hours.

So far, the Icelandic trough has been out classed by the much more dominant Azores high and so intensely warm, humid air has continued to sweep north, northeast from Spain, France up into Scandinavia, clipping the south and east of the British Isles.

Today is just another day in the 40s for Spain and Portugal, 30s for France and England, considerably fresher up the western side of Ireland and Scotland thanks to winds blowing in off the Atlantic.

Tomorrow is likely to be the last 30C day for the southeast of England of week as fresher air digs further south and east.

There has been strong indications over the past weekend that the Icelandic trough will finally strengthen and expand south deflating the high and pushing the heat east, southeast.

While the cooler and much more unsettled regime cleans out the air throughout much of Western Europe and holds into next week, there is indications that we’re nowhere near done with summer yet. Modelling shows the return of high pressure and in fact this high may hold through the 2nd half of August into September.

Are we done with the hot stuff? I certainly wouldn’t be going out on a limb and saying yes given it’s far too early, however the good news is that there’s good indication that the high builds into the UK from off the Atlantic which means winds blow from the NW not SSE.

As you can see from the above 7 day increments. The high builds over the UK and if that happens, I’d expect things to turn warm again as we enter September.
