Frequent wintry showers to pile into UK next week as flow blows from Canada/Greenland

The past week has been quiet thanks to a dominant blocking high over Europe. Next week is quite different and the chances are now taking place on the other side of the pond. The North Atlantic jet stream is strengthening thanks to the return of arctic air back into the Eastern US/Canada, increasing the thermal gradient.

Notice the 850mb anomaly clash over the Atlantic.

When arctic and subtropical meet, a strong jet stream is the result.

North American and Greenland air is set to cross the Atlantic via the jet stream and reach us early next week.  The southerly track of the jet means the UK is on the cold side.

The past week has seen one front after another fade overhead but late Sunday sees a much stronger wind and rain bearing front push through. This opens the door to a biting NW wind with frequent snow showers piling into the north and west UK.

Just how much snow we see, remains very unknown right now.

Despite +NAO/AO next 5-10 days, the GFS ensemble holds a cooler than normal theme through next 15 days.
