Major US Cities Shut Schools Ahead Of Coldest Air In 20 Years, Thaw On Horizon!

Written by on January 6, 2014 in United States of America with 0 Comments

The Central Plains and Mid-Mississippi Valley endured quite the snowstorm today with 8-14 inches falling widely and the heavy snows continue tonight over the Ohio Valley. Following 3-6 inches in Kansas City, 10-14 inches in St Louis and Chicago, the snow has moved out and as skies clear, so it’s turning fiercely cold tonight.

As the arctic front sweeps south through Tennessee and Alabama, so snow is breaking out over such cities as Nashville as of this writing.

Tonight’s temperatures peak up over Minnesota tonight with lows dipping towards -28 in Minneapolis while tonight merely sets the stage for one heck of a cold day all the way to Memphis and Nashville where it won’t get out of the 0s and 10s, setting the stage for the coldest night tomorrow night.

Here’s the surface chart for tomorrow and note the exceptionally low and rare thicknesses.

Nashville is expected to stay below 10 tomorrow and with snow cover likely (since it’s snowing hard tonight), there’s every chance that tomorrow night, for the first time since 1996, the low may drop below 0. Even sheltered spots in north Alabama could push 0 while many northern cities drop below 10.

Temperatures tomorrow will be simply brutal in Minneapolis and Chicago with highs holding in the -10s for the first time in 20+ years.

Further east and Atlanta is likely to drop below 8 for the first time since 2003 but if it hits 5 or lower, then they will have experienced the coldest night since 1985. Charlotte, NC will see a low drop below 10, perhaps dipping towards 6 or 7 while up in the mountains of Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia, lows will comfortably drop below 0.

As well as the bitter air temps tonight through Wednesday, wind chill values will be exceptional by Southern standards.
