Big Rains For Texas, Mississippi Valley, 25F+ Above Norm For Midwest, East (Includes Video!)

A flatter flow across the US has forced the coldest air over the West back to the north but this Pacific flow will be short lived as the trough returns and significantly deepens over the next 7 days.

An upper level storm pushing across the Southern Plains will bring big rains to Texas and the Lower and Mid-Mississippi Valley over the next 3-5 days with totals locally reaching 10 inches over Southeast Texas and Louisiana with 3-6 inch amounts up through Arkansas, Missouri, 2 inch over Indiana and Ohio.

Here’s the latest QPF chart for the next 3 days.

As for the warming this week over the eastern Plains, Ohio Valley and East, temperatures may approach 70 over parts of the Ohio Valley, reaching Kentucky, southern Indiana and Ohio. The 60s are possible all the way to New York City while low 50s may get up to Hartford and Providence.

Deeper snow will hold, although shrink over New England, so highs should hold in the 40s.

Here is the GFS forecast for Saturday. Note the core of warmth is centred over the Lower Midwest.

By Monday the warm core is focused over the Eastern Seaboard. A 60-degree high in New York City and surrounding areas between Saturday and Monday would be an impressive 25+ above normal for early January and pretty exceptional.

Records could well fall from this warm surge with highs well into the 70s, even low 80s over parts of the South and Southeast. I head down to Savannah, GA Friday and expect a high of around 80 degrees on Saturday.

I urge caution however in the fact that while the East Coast will turn unusually warm, there is some mighty cold diving into the West and Plains.

This growing thermal contrast will create quite the fight zone in between. Snow and ice events will become common later NEXT week as the arctic front migrates east. The Eastern warmth will get erased, so get ready!!
