A Look At The GFS 0-16 Day For Europe

Written by on January 8, 2013 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 9 Comments

The cold is still on track for Europe with a ‘cooling trend’ over the next 8 days but the following 8 continues to show very cold or even brutal for some parts.

I still believe that a much colder regime is coming to the UK as the AO tanks and more importantly (for UK) the NAO goes negative too. There is always some question as to how far that ridge gets to the west or northwest of the UK but check out the latest GFS Temp anomalies for the first 8 days, then the 8-16 day.

As for snowfall, by Sunday, the GFS shows quite a lot of snow across much of the UK with the mountains getting several inches of the white stuff. Whether this is overdone or not remains to be seen.

The model actually shows a swath of snow across Ireland, Wales and southern England by as early as Friday.

Interesting typo between 2nd and 3rd chart Mark! I know you normally favour the ECMWF model but that doesn’t appear to be going for such a cold set up. Do you think this has the modelling wrong?

    Thanks for the update!
