23-mile hike across the Southern Cairngorms: Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair, Monadh Mor, Beinn Bhrotain

It’s been nearly 2 years (Sept 2016) since I last walked in the Cairngorms. Having completed most of the major munros east of Aviemore, there are a group of four in the southern end of the range I wanted to complete. I love the vast open space and isolation of the Cairngorms.

This trip took me to a new area, beautiful Glen Feshie about 13 miles south of Aviemore, tucked below Sgor Gaoith and the southern wall of the Cairngorms. This walk typically takes in the two munros of Monadh Mor and Beinn Bhrotain.

However, thanks to loss in height and flat terrain after reaching 3, 400 ft, I decided to take in a 3rd munro. Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair sits on it’s own and is rather unimpressive. It has little to offer and a mere bump on the southern fringes of the range but another added to my list nonetheless. If anything it completes the group. I would go back another day to walk Sgor Gaoith which you pass on this walk.

Day/date: Sunday 10 June, 2018

Drive: 2 hours 20 mins

Weather: Fair, breezy, temp 21C at bottom, 7C on summits

Start point: Achlean, Glen Feshie

Munros: Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair, Monadh Mor, Beinn Bhrotain

Walk length: 23 miles

A still, cool morning at 5C allowed some steam rise off some bodies of water.

Looking down Glen Feshie.

Clearing the trees and entering the open heather slopes.

Note the fog which formed in the cool, still overnight air.

Entering the high open plateau of the southern edge of the Cairngorms

Miles of nothing but open space

Looking across to Sgor Gaoith

After walking 7 miles I finally reach the 1st munro of the day! 3, 342 ft Mullach Clach a’ Bhlair

Now for the long trek across the open plateau to Monadh Mor.

Nice shot of the steep walls of Sgor Gaoith

Starting the ascent up Monadh Mor. Clouds are threatening but don’t produce.

Sgor an Lochain Uaine (left) and Cairn Toul (right) now in view as clouds clear.

I reach the 2nd munro and 2nd highest of the day, 3, 650 ft Monadh Mor.

Stunning views looking across the Linn of Dee.

Cairn Toul’s distinct flat top.

Beinn Bhrotain from Monadh Mor

A new wave of threatening clouds cross Braeriach.

3rd and highest munro of the day reached, 3, 794ft Beinn Bhrotain
