East US: March Ends Mild But April To Start Cold Following Colder March Than February

March turned out colder than February for much of the Eastern US. Despite a cold month, March is ending mild but that doesn’t mean winter is done quite yet.

It was certainly a cold March for the interior Mid-Atlantic.

With recent days seeing a trough in both Southwest and Southeast, it’s turned early summer-like in between.

It may be a mild end to March for the Eastern US but renewed push of arctic air driving into the Plains will spread east into the first week of April.

In between it’s an atmospheric war and the result at this time of year is typically flooding or flash fooding, severe weather including tornadoes.

Note the flip on the CFSv2 2m temp anomalies between day 1-7 and 8-14.

The GFS ensemble 5-day means show the same flip but holds the cold more than CFSv2.
