Moderate Risk For Severe Weather Saturday, Icebergs STILL Floating On Lake Superior?

The latest system diving into the Rockies and Plains will present a renewed MODERATE risk for severe weather Saturday.

The SPC is out early with a moderate risk over the Central Plains.

Here’s the 500mb height chart for 18z Saturday.

Note the trough diving into the Four Corners with energy rounding the base. Perfect setup for strong upward motion and convergence over the heart of the Plains tomorrow afternoon into the evening.

Another big trough is poised to drop into the West mid next week and this will pump heat north and east as well as present more severe weather threats.

Regarding the heat, keep in mind the amount of water in the ground over the Midwest. This could well temper the level of heat and may spark storms and further rain. Humid it will be.

With systems and associated energy rolling east across the northern tier through the next 5-7 days, the focus of rainfall will be in the Northern Plains.

The next 2 weeks looks to be largely western trough/eastern ridge dominated according to the ECMWF. A large part of the reason is the ridge up over the GOA which is a hangover effect from last winter with that warm water up there.

The Wisconsin Department for Natural Resources contradicted NOAA a few days back by taking the below pictures which showed ‘icebergs’ still floating on Lake Superior. Around Madeline Island to be exact and yes on June 6th!

According to NOAA, ice has never been observed this late into the season and with ice first appearing nearly 8 months ago back on November 25th, this is likely to be the long period with ice on the Lakes since records began.

Wanting a cooling dip in Superior? Water temperatures remain cold with 30s (F) covering a large portion of the lake.

As of June 12th, it’s barely above freezing out in the middle of the lake!

This is absolutely stunning is it not? Beautifully put together report… Just imagine the significance of these times we’re living through! Interesting times on Planet Earth – our little bejeweled blue green marble spaceship home. Wrapped in swirling winds, cradled by ocean waves, blessed by rain fed rich dark soils, warmed by just enough of the light from our own private sun, sharing the bounty together with all the myriad forms of life – many yet undiscovered – and protected by the ever-so-fragile atmosphere which protects it all!
