SNOWY PATTERN: 1-2ft Of Snow On The Ground By Next Sunday From Kansas To New England?

Written by on February 2, 2014 in United States of America with 0 Comments

A ton of snow is expected now through next Sunday as a series of winter storms cross the country. The region which could be hit really hard is from Kansas to southern New England, right in the fight zone between arctic air coming south and warm, moist Gulf air lifting north.

Chicago cleared out this morning after it’s 4 inch snowfall yesterday. That very system is now crossing the Ohio/Tennessee Valleys bringing snow, rain and freezing rain and heading New York bound. The great news is the Superbowl continues to look good with a game time temperature around 40 but it’s after the crowd clears, so the weather moves in.

Here was the scene in Chicago yesterday.

Lows tonight go back below 0 in Chicago. In Minneapolis, tonight will be the 35th sub 0 night this winter, the most to date since back in the winter of 81-82. Following another snowstorm midweek, lows could go towards -16 in Minneapolis and -10 in Chicago.

The current bad weather has shifted south and east of Chicago with roads snow covered over parts of North and West Texas right now!

ECM is more bullish than GFS and has axis of 4-8 inches in a line from Charleston, WV, Frederick, MD, Philadelphia to Atlantic City. New York City is on the north side but still sees 3 inches.

That system is followed by another system hot on it’s heels Tue-Wed then another potentially bigger threat next weekend for the northeast.

Here’s a closer look at the Northeast and note the 18 inch area encompassing the DC to Boston corridor with 2 ft totals just northwest of Washington and very close to Philadelphia.

Here’s a look at the ECMWF surface/precipitation charts through the next week and not 2 or 3 but 4 systems are expected one after the other with each one laying as much as 4-8, locally 12 inches from the Plains to New England. As you can see in the above snow charts, we could see a solid 1-2 feet of snow on the ground by this time next week with a focus of heaviest snows from western Maryland up through Pennsylvania into the NYC, Hartford and Providence metros.

Cold Stands Strong Over The Country Next 10-14 Days

As well as VERY SNOWY, it will be very cold also, particularly over the heart of the nation and on the backside of each passing storm system. Places such as Amarillo could see a few shots at 0 as arctic air diving south over the Plains.

Here’s the ECMWF 500mb/850 temp charts for the upcoming week.
