Snow For The South, Back Into The East This Week

Written by on January 14, 2013 in North and South America, United States of America with 0 Comments

There has been plenty of warm air over the Eastern Seaboard this past weekend and more records are likely to fall over the Southeast today through Wednesday but a sharp change comes today for the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast as the boundary which brought snow, ice, tornadoes, damaging winds and flooding rains across the nations mid-section, east today.

The mountains of Virginia, West Virginia looks to be the best place for any back edge snowfall later today as cooler air gets dragged in from behind. Temps this AM are in the 50s, low 60s over VA into DC but through the day, those readings will fall into the low 40s by late PM and the 30s overnight. Even Washington DC may get a little flurry once the main band pushes through.

Heavy rain will be a factor, particularly through this afternoon. 1-2 inches are possible from Mississippi up through the Piedmont of the Carolinas and into the Washington DC area.

A secondary wave brings a strip of snow to Louisiana, Mississippi up into Tennessee and this will push into the Northeast Wednesday. The GFS suggests a 1-2 inch snow across parts of NE Pennsylvania, N New Jersey, NYC into Connecticut later Wednesday.

Then there comes a more substantial push of colder air Thursday-Friday and this may bring a further few inches to parts of the Northeast as well as down over the Mid-Atlantic.

Here’s the GFS snow chart for Friday, notice the swath over the same areas which may get hit Wednesday and another further south over VA-NC.

Next week will get very interesting as major cold drives south into the Plains and then slides east through the Midwest and eventually the East. The coldest air in not only this winter but in several years looks to be on the way.

Chicago, Indianapolis, Pittsburgh all look to see a few nights below zero. The Major Cities from DC to Boston may see under 10-degree lows!
