With a deep trough and low thicknesses centred directly over the Northeast along with high pressure supporting clear skies and calm winds, this long anticipated day, dawned with the coldest start throughout the region since last March. The weather since Superstorm Sandy has been tough for those who remain in homes without power as cold weather steadily lowers the temperature inside and when you get nights like last, it’s gets particularly uncomfortable.

It was cold enough for some records to fall this morning. Newark, NJ fell to 27 while Providence, RI hit 24. 20s extended all the way to South Jersey while teens crept into Northwest Jersey with Hamburg dropping to at least 19. The temperature fell all the way to 18 at Quogue in eastern Long Island.

A low of 31 this morning at Central Park, New York was the earliest sub-32 since 1988 according to my twitter follower @nycWeatherGuy. The 32 in Philadelphia was also the earliest subfreezing low of fall. Down in the capital and with 30s and 20s, here too, it was the coldest so far.

Tonight turns cloudy as the Nor’easter gets going down across the Southeast and will head up the coast tomorrow.
