Sandy’s Wrath Will Live With Northeasterners Forever! (Video Footage!!)

NOAA

Dubbed a ‘Superstorm’, Sandy which had a circulation 1000 miles across, literally swalled half of the United States from Florida all the way to Canada. This storm, said to likely rival Katrina is cost brought utter devastation to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast after producing record storm surge into New York City, Long Island and New Jersey, flooding rainfall, 80-90 mph surface winds and 140 mph winds on top of Mt Washington, NH.

The storm surge has ravaged a large section of the Jersey Shore, reshaping it forever.

As for New York City, the SE track of Sandy and position at which the centre hit the coast and most importantly, size and shear power, meant an unprecidented storm surge through New York Harbour and down Long Island sound. This forced water rises of between 10-15 feet meant Battery Park went underwater. Both East and Hudson Rivers grew as they consumed parts of Manhattan. In Brooklyn and Queens all the way north to the Bronx, many sections flooded due to record water rises caused by water from the Atlantic and LI Sound flowing in towards NYC. These waters have caused significant flooding in the sunway system, also created a waterfall at the construction site to Ground Zero.

This epic storm also had a cold side, dumping between 20-40 inches of snow in the Appalachains. Winds gusting over 60 mph created fierce blizzard conditions which cut power to entire mountain communities over North Carolina, West Virginia and Virginia. The wicked combination of heavy/wet snow and gales brought down many trees, powerlines and roofs.

As well as all the wind, rain, snow and storm surge, temperature flips and reversals have been equally as impressive with 70F highs in Montreal while it was stuck in the 30s all the way the Great Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.
