Get Ready! Summer Is Returning To The UK From Wednesday Onwards, 90° Likely For London Again, 80° For Scotland!

Following a wild weekend of weather for many throughout the UK with thunderstorms producing funnel clouds and flash flooding, things are set to turn increasingly more settled as high pressure begins to build in from the southwest towards the mid to later part of this week. The stubborn low which deepened and stalled off Ireland and was responsible for the stormy weather this weekend is now pushing out and across the North Sea is much weaker fashion and this will open the door to heights building from the south.

Tomorrow will see more unsettled conditions but with much less coverage and intensity. The depature of this low to the east will bring a brief cooldown with highs struggling to hit 20C even down in normally milder London and the Southeast but once heights rise through Wednesday the showers should dimish and warmer air will start to work northwards over the UK.

Both surface and upper level high pressure will start to show it’s hand by Wednesday and as we progress towards the later part of the workweek, temperatures should push towards the upper 80s over the South of England and it may hit 90 again around the London area by Thursday if not Friday-Saturday.

Even up here in Scotland, heights will be strong enough to support little in the way of cloud cover and maximum sunshine and so temperatures should rise well into the upper 70s, perhaps 80 in a few places.

As forecasted way back during July, this was a pattern I felt was coming although the ‘overall unsettled theme’ would continue given the onset of the el nino and due to the still negative and at best, neutral NAO. I felt that less rain was to be had, when comparing to the record rains of April, June and July (but there was still a risk of more heavy, torrential downpours at times) and more chance at seeing more frequent pushed of warmth.

The low spinning and meandering around the Atlantic will eventually reach the UK bringing a return to the unsettled theme and a return to cooler temperatures but as we progress through August, we can expect more warmth.

Right now Mark we are in the midst of the dirty ridge here in London. This could be the coldest or one of the coldest days of the 30th Olympiad. If we hit 90 in London later this week you should be Knighted 🙂 Cheers
