Extreme Heat across Southern Europe

Over the last few days, we’ve seen high pressure really intensify across particularly southwest Europe, over the Iberian Penninsula. This built highs to the warmest levels of summer so far and some of this blowtorch heat has spread north over the Pyrenees and into southern France.

Toulouse in southern France topped 103 (39.5C) on Saturday. Seville in south-central Spain reached 104 on Saturday but it was even hotter 106 (41C) the day before. To the north in central Spain, the capital Madrid wasn’t much better where the high topped 102 on Saturday. Zaragoza, also in Spain reached 106 on Saturday.

Further east and around the Med Basin, it was also hottest of summer for Rome, Italy which topped out at 96 on Saturday. In Athens, Greece, yesterday’s 95 was a little cooler than back on both the 17th and 18th where it topped 98, highest of August but not of summer. Last month the temperatures peaked at 102.

Oddities of Past Climatology

There are linkages between abnormal chill on West Coast to Heat and Drought in South

Portland, Oregon back in 1957 had to wait till Sept 13th for their first 90-degree day. Rose City, Oregon back in 1980 had to wait till Oct 5th for their first 90-degree day.

Interestingly, both cities, although late, saw their first 90s yesterday.

Ironically 1957 was Texas’ was the year in which they saw their worst drought up until this year. As for 1980, well much of this summer’s heat records have been compared to 1980. So, what that tells me is that the worst of the of Southern Plains heat and drought occured during abnormal and even record cool summers along the West Coast.
