HOUSTON LOST ENOUGH SOIL MOISTURE AS TEMPS WARM ABOVE 100 DEGREE FOR SECOND STRAIGHT DAY? NOW IN LOWS 80S THANKS TO STORMS

After a second straight day of 100-degree highs after a summer that, though has been warm and humid, hasn’t been bad at all when looking at 100-degree heat. Houston would be considered one of the hottest places to visit in the US when combining air temperature with humidity. My first ever visit to the US back in July 98 was to Houston and boy was it not hot and humid. Indeed it was one of the hottest summers on record and highs regularly topped 100, lows in the 80s and heat indexes topping near 120. The location is cruel. When soils are dry, Houston lies just far enough inland that 100-degree heat isn’t all that difficult to achieve, also it’s close enough proximity to the Gulf, means the air temp, combined with mid to high 70-degree dew points makes Houston, at times a terrible place to be for sweatiness.

The rains of July dampened the heat somewhat but I believe enhanced the humidity making the upper 90s feel close to 110 most days… Yes, it can be a long, hot and steamy summer down in Houston. The drier weather of recent weeks has helped the sun dry out those soils and therefore more solar rays could go into heating the air, rather than evaporating the moisture seeping out of the soils, therefore the highs have touched 100 at least two days in 2010.

SEATTLE WARMER THAN SATURDAY WITH YESTERDAY’S DEGREE HIGH

Seattle surprisingly topped a “higher” reading yesterday than what was thought to be a scorcher Saturday. Yesterday saw strong east winds and lots of sun, resulting in a high of 96 at Sea-Tac.. amazing stuff indeed.

DISSAPOINTMENT FOR MUCH OF SCOTLAND WITH COOLER HIGHS TODAY THAN YESTERDAY

After yesterday’s glorious mid-70s, today was dissapointing and tonight it’s pouring. Clouds remained thick, most of the day and actually held down the temperature some 12 degrees lower than yesterday….
