On Weather & Climate Through the Eyes of Mark Vogan

Today’s 75 degree high, second warmest of entire summer of 2010 but clear, calm nights growing colder with longer hours of darkness.
Mark Vogan

After a pretty crummy pattern after a pleasant May and June, the trough dropped down from the North Atlantic ans has hung around ever since bringing mostly unsettled, cool days to most of Scotland, Northern Ireland, much of northern Wales and England, the only area that’s been not too bad has been an area from Cardiff to Gravesend where highs have bounced between the mid-70s to mid-80s.

Today saw a high here at my house in Lennoxtown warm to a perfect 75 degrees under brilliant sunshine but it’s becoming noticable in the lengthening nights and hours of darkness that as soon as the sun drops below the horizon, some 2 hours earlier than back in late June, the temps are falling down through the 50s easier and will soon regularly fall into the 40s when the nights are calm and star lit. The high that’s in place right now is not one of sub-tropical origin, therefore it’s relatively dry and with cooler air suspended aloft, when it’s dry, at this time of year it heats easily into the low to mid-70s when winds are light and skies cloudfree, but those same conditions by day also allow easy cooling by night, especially when it’s practically fully dark by 10pm and remains so until 5.30-6am, this allows a longer period of cooling and therefore even frosts aren’t far round the corner. Last night’s 48-degree low will become more common from now on, despite the same potential for more 70s, even a run at 76-degrees (my highest reading of summer) between now and the end of September, a month that often can be Scotland’s “best sunshine and warmth month) and hopefully we can capture a little taste of summer before another winter sets in. My temperature held to 71 degree till a fairly late 7pm but what was very noticable was that the temperature soon fell from 71 to 67 in one hour, indicative to the lose of sunlight and the dryness of the air, this tells me that if skies remain clear and winds light to calm and fog doesn’t form too early, we may see a low tomorrow morning cooler than this morning, perhaps 45 degrees. It was foggy by the time I pulled back the curtains this morning and this was due to the temperature and the dew point coming to the same level!

These late days of summer can be the best and hopefully under high pressure tomorrow (before the return to unsettled weather by Tuesday if not Wednesday) we may see more mid-70s and perhaps during the month of September, but always remember that these air masses, though glorious and often very warm by day can cool much faster and stronger than back during June and July.

southern plains
As the ridge becomes squeezed by a relatively strong cold front that’s pushing down from the Northern tier, this has produced strong storms across the central plains, deflecting the blowtorch to the south. As for the south!, it’s plain old hot with lots of sunshine and unfortunately that trend continues as the front will only get so far as the ridge is simply too strong to break down even by a strong front. Highs today will be once again hot with 100 in Oklahoma City, 105 in Dallas, 98 in Lubbock, 100 in El Paso, 102 in San Antonio and Austin and perhaps another 99 degrees down in Houston where the air willl be like a steam bath with dew points well into the mid-70s. All across southern and central Texas, up into the Mississippi Valley, dew points soar into the upper 70s, even a few low 80s up in Missouri, combine the near 100 degree heat and it will feel close to 115 from Houston to Shreveport to Little Rock. Lows tonight will merely fall to the upper 70s for most places that get to 95 or higher today. Houston may fail to drop below 80 whilst Galveston down to S. Padre Island may remain at 85.
southeast & florida
The soupy, cloudy days will continue with a uniform rainfall amount across much of the Deep South ranging from a half to over 2 inches of rain, those rains may become torrential during the PM hours when the sun (though not visible for much of the time) will heat the air below the clouds into the mid-80s from New Orleans to Atlanta, therefore adding a little enregy and bouyancy to the air. There should be periods of sun in between though… Lows tonight fall to around the low 70s for Charlotte and Atlanta, mid-70s for New Orleans and near 80 for Memphis. Florida as usual will see isolated thudnerstorms anywhere today with highs around 88-90 at the coast, low to mid-90s inland. Lows tonight will fall into the mid-70s at the coast, low 70s inland.
northeast & mid-atlantic
Across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, look for sunshine and modest humidity levels today. Highs will warm into the mid-80s with a chance of a gusty storm and a quick 1″ of rain from Charleston, WV to the DC-Baltimore area as a front pushes in from the west. To the north, it should be fine and dry with a nice Sunday on tap from Philly up through New England with highs generally between 78-84 degrees, New England may be cooler with highs ranging from 70-78 from the Adirondacks to Boston and Cape Cod, the beaches will be in the 60s to the north, upper 70s to the south. Lows tonight will drop into the upper 60s for the cities, low 60s and even 50s for outlying rural areas.
northwest
You folks living in the Northwest region will once again see a hot and very sunny day with highs in the I-5 corridor once again enduring a downsloping east to northeast wind blowing out of the Cascades and yes, more mid to even upper 90s. As for the coast, we may see a slight relaxing of the heat for areas such as Forks, WA where highs yesterday topped the century mark, clouds will linger and hold highs to the pleasant 70s (yesterday, whilst Portland and surrounding cities topped 100, it was a downright cold 57 degrees in the centrak Oregon coast thanks to cooling west winds, yet up in Astoria on the north Oregon coast, it warmed to 90 as winds blew out of the east, allowing the downslope winds to compress and heat up. Whilst I’m calling for a high once again to reach the 90s for both Seattle and Portland, we should see a slight trim back today from yesterday’s 95 in Seattle and Portland’s 98, perhaps 93 and 97 respectively as east winds aren’t as prominant, Look for 70s in the mtns and 90s east of the mountains. Lows tonight will cool to a very comfortable 50s along the coast, 60s for the I-5 corridor and east of the mtns, mtn areas should cool into the 40s.
southwest
For you lovers of hot weather! YOUR GOING TO LIKE THIS! The heat is on and yep, that marine layer won’t be the big player from the beaches to Downtown LA and even some of the coastal valleys, like has been the case for pretty much all of summer 2010. Yes, you folks to the north in San Francisco and all the way down to beautiful San Diego, you folks are going to see sunshine and warm sunshine at that…. For the beaches, your going to see a modest marine layer, but don’t panic, that WILL burn off and yes the sunshine will be out and temps will rise from the 50s to low 70s, PERFECT BEACH WEATHER! As for points inland, say Downtown LA, it’s going to be warm with a high this afternoon around 84, Coastal Valleys that are sheltered by coastal mtns will warm into the mid-90s, Inland Empire locales such as Riverside will see highs push 100 degrees today, Woodland Hills in the western San Fernando Valley also will likely take a run at 100 whilst Pasadena take a run at 95, so a good 10 degree difference from downtown LA, only some 12 miles to the northeast as no Pacific breezes can penetrate around the Santa Monica Mtns and Hollywood Hills as those winds that crank up by noon blow out of the NW almost parallel to the coast. Inland and sheltered by at least 2 mountain ranges and it’s going to appraoch if not exceed the warmest levels of the whole summer between today and Tuesday. Palmdale and Lancaster in the Antelope Valley to the northeast of LA will warm under brilliant sunshine and a mild start off overnight reading near 70 to a 3-5pm reading of near 105 (next two days may appraoch 108-110). Over the high desert it’s going to be between 105-110 at Barstow, whilst Baker warms into the low to mid 110s. To the southeast of LA, Palm Springs to Indio it’s going to warm to around 110 today and perhaps 115 by tomorrow and Tuesday. Death Valley, look for highs that appraoch the 120-mark, even 123-125 tomorrow and Tuesday. Remember, this summer hasn’t been too bad for Death Valley as the highest reading all summer is 125. Could it see a 126? Both Vegas and Phoenix should warm towards 110 with Phoenix under strongest pressure heights aloft and they may endure highs close to 113 today and near 115 tomorrow and Tuesday. The Central Calif beaches may find themselves under cloud and fog and therefore temps in all of California may be lowest here from say Lompoc to the south all the way north to Half Moon Bay where highs may remain in the low to mid-60s. The cool and cloud shrouded cities of San Diego and San Francisco should see highs push 78-80 for downtown San Diego, low 70s for downtown San Fran, 90s for the East Bay and 90s to low 100s for areas east of San Diego.
northern plains
The trough that brought 60s and rain to Montana has now progressed eastwards and is now over the North-Central plains and bringing windy, cool conditions to western areas from eastern Montana acroiss the Dakotas, temps are warmer and sunnier for areas that were only in the 60s across Montana yesterday, today it’s bumped back up to the mid to upper 70s! 70s for the Dakotas and yes, even Minneapolis will see a high of only around 78 today with windy conditions at times. Down in Chicago the sun will shine and the high should warm to around 84 comfortable degrees. It will be a pleasant day along the I-70 corridor from Kansas City to St Louis under sunny skies and warm sunshine with a high for both cities around 90, though warm, still not as bad as both these cities of seen of late and for much of the summer.Lows tonight should drop back to the 50s and 60s for most, Low 70s from Chicago and Detroit down to the I-70 urban areas.

90 verses 57 on the Oregon Coast, More Mid to upper 90s from Seattle to Portland

High pressure spinning over the interior of Washington and Oregon is producing a stiff easterly air flow from the interior towards the Pacific, these winds as they cross and downslope the Cascades and series of coastal ranges is forcing the air to compress and therefore heat up as it descends. The I-5 corridor lying to the west of the mountains is enduring a classix pattern in which temperatures warm to “HOT” levels of mid to upper 90s with even 100 degrees not far from the cooling ocean. Seattle yesterday topped 95 degrees whilst Portland endured a 97 degree high, I believe Forks near the north Washington coast topped 100 degrees whilst coastal Quillayute touched a scorching 99 degress. Despite the hot weather all the way to the coastal areas, normally soaked under a marine layer and have been shivering in the 50s for highs of late, the east winds has eroded the marine cloud and fog deck offshore, but for some central Oregon coastal communities, the heat has not shown up, this thanks to a marine layer brough onshore by a west wind. The east flow has not gotten to all the coast from inland and where it hasn’t the west wind has been dominant, bringing ashore the clouds and fog, therefore holding highs to the chilly mid-50s. Newport, Oregon saw yesterday only warm to 57 degree under clouds, whilst Astoria on the north Oregon shore topped out at 90 degrees thanks to east winds and sunshine.

Today should see more sunshine and warming easterly downslope winds with a high near 95 expected at Seattle and 97 for Portland. East of the mountains which should warm into the low 70s, perfect for hiking, biking and just enjoying the fresh outdoors, temperatures will be in the upper 80s to upper 90s. The hottest area will be places, such as the I-5 corridor which lies directly in the path of the downslope effect. Directly underneath the core of high pressure it will be hot but the heat isn’t enhanced in any way like we’re seeing between I-5 and some coastak locales such as Forks.

The heat should continue through tomorrow before easing off some midweek as the high breaks down and shifts position, this will then allow more marine influence back onshore and into the I-5 corridor.

The rain spell from the previous low is all but over !
However, showers/thundershowers along the monsoon axis will continue.
We will now catch up, or rather chase up the other developments estimated in “vagaries”, on the 13th.

A new low in the bay on the 17th ? Well, CMC says yes, it will form and move inland from the 18th.

ECMWRF and GFS say nothing is on the horizon ! two diverse views.

So, now lets wait and watch, it’s a matter of 2 days. Bay of Bengal is putting up surprises !

Then, the next was the MJO push in the Arabian Sea. Yes, that’s at least on stream. It has shown good clouding, and is heading towards the kerala coast.

Of-course lots of rain on the Kerala coast, and Karnataka coast. A little bit of rain creeping in the interiors of Karnataka is possible on Monday/Tuesday.

But its for a day only. Rain patch can move up along the west coast to hit the Maharashtra coast, that is around Thursday but I see it weakening by then.

On Tuesday/Wednesday (17th/18th), a local vortex is likely to form, for a day, just around the region east of Mumbai. So, some rain inland ,in the madhya Maharashtra region.

Mumbai: Slight change in the forecast put up on 13th. Monday, passing rains, sunny with 10 mms of rain. Rain intensity will increase for a day on Tuesday/Wednesday.Thursday, a sudden drop in the frequency of showers.Warm, or should I put hot ?
