>The Plot Thickens as Heavy snow deepens Scottish snowpack, now we’re in for a frigid few days

>THE MUCH ANTICIPATED FRIGID AIR IS LOOKING LIKELY TONIGHT THROUGH CHRISTMAS DAY AND MAYBE BEYOND.

Did you think this morning was cold, think again.

Get Ready!

I predicted over the weekend and even late last week of the potential for a frigid period into this week, the BBC weather forecast confirms what I had been thinking well before hand.

Skies are to clear out after a day of heavy snow which has created all sorts of travel headaches today and with a solid 2-6 inch snow cover and cold air settling in, I expect lows to take a plunge towards the -8C in town centers and -10C outwith over the next two to three nights.

Glasgow and Edinburgh should expect a low by tomorrow morning around 19 degrees but outlying rural areas should be looking at lows as cold as 12 degrees in some spots… Some highland glens could be heading for -20C either tonight, tomorrow night or Thursday night…

Here at my house, my forecast calls for a low of 17 degrees tonight, 14 degrees tomorrow night and 18 degrees on Christmas morning. High won’t top freezing until Boxing Day with the coldest high which may only warm to 25 degrees. Somewhere in the highlands may see a “high” of 14 degrees after bottoming out at around -4F…

    >the lowest temperature recorded between 2001 and 2009 in cowdenbeath was -7.1 degrees C. See http://www.fifeweather.co.uk/cowdenbeathrecords.html

However, Leuchars fell to -7.3 degrees C this evening. So a coastal town fell to a lower temp today in Fife, than Cowdenbeath has seen in the past ten years or so. I think this shows just how cold this evening has been so far. The temp is climbing here as a bank of snow moves west of east through the central belt.

    >These low temperatures are surprising. I have just arrived home to Kirkcaldy this evening to find it is – 6 degrees C (5 pm). Lets not forget the fact that Kirkcaldy is coastal, so this makes me all the more surprised. I know that Tulloch Bridge in the Highlands is sitting at -15 degrees C at the moment (5.20 pm). We should be looking for a record low for Scotland this evening. I believe it will be out there. The temperature could easily drop 13 degrees C overnight.
