Some interesting numbers for sure but in all honesty, the North Dakota-Minnesota numbers aren’t all that impressive. Mid-teens below zero is pretty run of the mill and -4 or -5 in Twin Cities is expected at this time of year. However I am not saying it isn’t cold and well below normal but we could see and have seen 30s below zero at this point as well as -45 to -50 by mid to late month, so I am trying to keep it in perspective.. The core of the really cold air has been centered over the High Plateau’s of the West where snow cover is in abundance, strongest Arctic high pressure with lowest thickness values, meaning the maximum cold has been to the west of the Mississippi. Height and the thinner air coupled with clear, calm skies has made for the coldest nights in the past 11 to 20 years for CA-NV and ID and likely other spots.
I may add for information to this post through the next few days..
Thanks for reading.
