Weekend To Remain Wintry For Scotland But Turning Stormy For Southern England/Wales

With the help of a northerly (arctic origin) showery air flow, several spots over the UK have woken to a fresh covering of snow this morning!

Where you perhaps didn’t see the snow, you may have had ice instead as skies cleared during the second half of the overnight allowing wet ground to quickly freeze.

In Braemar, the thermometer dipped to -7C. Tonight is likely to be colder as even into the afternoon hours, temperatures are struggling to get out of negative territory and won’t prior to sunset, a lot of that helped by shelter from sun and snow cover.

Providing skies are nice and clear, we could push -10C tonight. Check out this view of a snow covered Glen Coe this afternoon. Sunshine isn’t reaching the lower glen!

The weekend’s first half will see the continuation of a cold NW flow straight from the arctic with showers of rain, sleet and snow largely confined to far western areas while mostly sunny skies is prevalent further east following a hard overnight frost.

Through Saturday conditions shall go downhill across southern Ireland and the UK as a deep low approaches. The worst of the wind, rain and possible snow on the northern flank, should be between 10pm Saturday and 10am Sunday.

Rain and flooding is likely to be the greatest threat rather than wind but that being said, 50-70 mph winds along the channel coast could still cause issues and certainly issues to shipping!
