-55C (-67F) This Week May Have Tied October Record For Greenland

Chris Beal has been keeping us updated through the past week on the extreme cold experienced over Greenland.

Early to mid last week, an unusually cold surface high sat over the remote central Greenland research outpost of Summit Camp. As a result of the clear cold, largely windless atmosphere above the vast icecap which makes up most of Greenland, temperatures dropped to values that would be considered cold in January night never mind October. This is interesting considering the amount of discussion about a ‘melting’ Greenland ice cap that’s causing record cold water temps in the North Atlantic.

There was a 3-5 night stretch during the past week where lows dipped to between -52 and -55C. Potentially the coldest 4 day stretch for October on record?

The record lowest temperature ever recorded in Greenland during October is -55.2C (-67F). Though we await confirmation, it would appear the October record for Greenland may have been tied.
