Quick look back at last week’s anomalies across Europe.

Cooler and drier than normal across the north but warmer than normal across the south, wetter, stormier from N Iberia into the Alps…

Check this out… the cold North Atlantic and therefore colder air in the mid levels extending from Atlantic across the UK is helping upper sections of the Scottish Mountains to hold onto deep snow pack for longer this year. As pointed out by Iain Cameron, last year on Carn Mór Dearg and Ben Nevis(below images) was ‘exceptional’ but this year is even better thanks to unusually late season snowfall and colder than normal air up at munro level.

Here’s the current 500mb height anomalies.

Note the upper trough over Iberia. This is promoting storminess and even snow over the tops of the Sierra Nevada believe it or not. While cooler and more unsettled across SW and NW Europe, it’s much warmer than normal over eastern Europe thanks to a strong ridge and southerly flow.

The temp chart off the ECMWF at 18z Friday shows the heat focused over Iberia while it’s much cooler over SE Europe.

Here’s another quick look at the ECMWF surface for this work week. Only change from yesterday and previous days is the more unsettled look later Friday into Saturday as a system slides in from the Atlantic.
