Big Temp Contrast For UK This Week, Link Between Current Strat Warming & Cooler End To April

We have a lot of interesting weather coming up this week and in the coming weeks.

Starting with the upcoming 7 days, look for a big time north-south divide over the UK, especially as we enter the middle part of the week.

Today’s wet and breezy system that’s even bringing snow back to high level routes will quickly scoot off into the North Sea later and this will be replaced by a chilly high. A few frosty nights coming up for the countryside.

As we head into Monday and Tuesday, a boundary with waves running along it (on NW flank of the high) will slowly drop into the Northwest UK. As it does look for wet and windy weather over Northern Ireland and Scotland. Rain amounts Mon-Wed could be significant in the West Highlands.

It’s as this boundary sinks south that warmer, sub-tropical air gets forced into the southern half of the UK. That boundary looks to be sitting on the England-Scotland border by Wednesday afternoon. North of it, it’s cool and breezy with highs of just 5-10C but to the south where winds will be stiff but warm out of the WSW, with the help of sunshine, look for a large area of southern England above 21C!

Models suggest Greater London could be in the 23-25C range Wednesday afternoon.

As a result of the above, this is the large temperature gradient we could see on Wednesday below. A summer-like 25C is possible around London while it may be a chilly 5C with a cold wind blowing over the West Highlands.

We’ve got an ongoing stratospheric warming event across the pole. This is something we simply couldn’t get in all of the past two winters. It’s the effects of this warming which is leading us to below the colder, trough pattern the models are showing for the final 10 days of April..

This could switch the AO/NAO negative.

Stratospheric warming eventsĀ have been known to kick in late during years when the solar cycle is coming off the max from the year before, making for spells of ugly, cool weather later in spring.
