This frigid February just keeps on going and while we may be ending the month and meteorological winter, this extreme cold pattern doesn’t appear to be letting go anytime soon.

As of this morning, US snow cover spans an impressive 58% and with more arctic highs on the playing field, well there’s likely to be more record shattering cold to come.

This cold as well as spreading percentage of snow cover across the Lower 48 up, it’s also driving up Great Lakes ice cover. This is the first back to back year of 80%+ ice cover since the late 1970s.

According to Anthony Farnell, Great Lakes ice cover is highest on this date than any year in the last 35 years!

MOST ICE ON CHESAPEAKE BAY SINCE 1990’s?

According to the Capital Weather Gang…

Ice covers vast expanses of the Chesapeake Bay – likely more than at any time in years.

“Most of the Bay is frozen,” says Brian Jackson, an analyst at the National Ice Center.  “The coverage extent is way above normal.”

Jackson says there aren’t good long-term records of Chesapeake Bay ice extent, but that this year’s levels are even more expansive than last year’s maximum reached at the end of January, which followed several outbreaks of bitter cold.

It’s probable there hasn’t been this much ice since at least 1996 or 1994, two other frigid winters in the Mid-Atlantic.
