Eastern US Arctic Outbreak Of Feb 2015 Sets NEW All-Time Records! MORE Extreme Cold This Week

Written by on February 23, 2015 in United States of America, Winter 2014/15 with 0 Comments

Remember back to Nov 1 and the mention of potential of a ‘super arctic outbreak’ this winter?? Well it may not be Jan 1985 but this February will go down as one of the worst in Eastern US history. For some, monthly, for others, all-time record lows are being set. At the very least, for millions stretching from Michigan to Georgia up to Maine, this is the coldest 2 weeks in at least a decade.

This reading caught my eye in the 2nd of truly brutally cold morning’s last week over northeast Ohio.

Based on the sharp drop off AFTER clouds dissipated AND the fact the air mass was as cold withy -30s at 5,000ft, little wind, solid snow cover and a frozen Lake Erie, this reading is believable.

The all-time record low for Ohio is -39.

Will this be looked at and set as a tie for the all-time state low in OH? We saw TWO nights back in Jan 2009 where the temp hit -37 over NW Illinois and NOAA dismissed it.

This is also the coldest February weather in Kentucky since 1899!

Frigid Morning Sets Records Across East Kentucky

Arctic high pressure combined with a deep snow pack to produce some of the coldest temperatures since January 1994 overnight and this morning. Several locations fell to 20 below zero and colder…temperatures not observed during the month of February in eastern Kentucky since 1899.
As for records, the London Corbin Airport fell to 17 below zero. This establishes a new all-time February record low temperature. The previous record low for the month was 11 below zero set on February 1, 1971. Records for the London Corbin Airport date back to 1954.
Here at NWS Jackson, our low was a comparatively balmy 7 below zero. While this establishes a new record low for the date and is also the coldest temperature recorded so late in the season, it does not set a new monthly record low temperature. That record remains 8 below zero set on February 4, 1996. Records at NWS Jackson date back to 1981.
Here is a summary of low temperatures observed this morning…

Miami, FL tied a record low of 42 which also ended a record low streak about 45 degrees. To the north up in Atlanta, GA, the high of 28 was not just a record but it was also the latest subfreezing high since March 2, 1980.
