We have the next system crossing the Rockies out into the Plains with a renewed severe weather threat. Strong to severe storms are blowing up and causing problems as of this writing. What’s interesting however is the depth of the trough which digs down the Rockies in the coming days.
Here’s the initial upper air pattern.
As a consequence of that upper pattern, we have a moderate risk of severe weather this afternoon and evening over S Minnesota, north and central Iowa extending into SE South Dakota and eastern Nebraska with a larger slight risk area.

Look at how the trough deepens over the Rockies by 48 hours and as a result the ridge really pumps further east.
The serious severe weather threat will continue Tuesday.
And Wednesday.
Here’s the rather anomalous upper air pattern at 12z Wednesday.
With that depth of trough and consequential eastern ridge, we may find it snowing over the higher elevations of the Rockies while it approaches the mid-90s from Cincinnati to DC while a major outbreak of severe weather breaks out in between.
Speaking of snow, check out the latest 48 hour snow chart over the Pacific Northwest. Yes, it does have accumulating snow around Yellowstone Park.
The ECMWF is even more bullish.
Here’s the 2-metre temperatures at 18z Wednesday.90s are widespread throughout the Mid-Atlantic, even extending into Philadelphia and nearing Newark and New York City.
ECMWF 2-metre temps Wednesday at 18z. Note the 40s and 50s in the Rockies while it’s into the 90s through the Midwest and East.
2-metre temps and anomalies (C) Wednesday PM.
