The wild pattern we have currently over the US has brought snow to Southern California while record 100s sheltered the central Plains. The upcoming afternoons and evenings have to be watched for the severe weather potential as the core of the trough swings east into the Plains.
This time around, the heat doesn’t appear to make it all the way up to NYC and Boston.
Here’s the 500mb off the ECMWF at 6 hrs. Note the big ridge pumping 90s into Iowa today but the NW flow keeping things cool in the North East.

This morning’s lows.
It’s been very cool north of the border with Calgary only seeing ‘highs’ in the mid-30s, their average by now is meant to be 58. It got down to at least 22 there this morning, record or near record territory.
Current temps.
As you can see it was a very warm day all the way to Iowa today but that warmth never made it to Minneapolis or Chicago. Tomorrow will see the 80s reach both, the first 80s of the year for the Windy City. Note the chill over the Rockies though. In stark contrast to the low 90s in Iowa, highs didn’t get out of the 40s in western Nebraska, South Dakota, 30s in parts of Montana and Wyoming.
Here were the departures from normal.
As stated several times already, the highlight in the next 2-3 days is sure to be severe weather but through the weekend the jet flattens and in comes the next storm over the Pacific Northwest, that could bring a significant mid-May snowstorm to parts of the Rockies including the cities of Denver and Cheyenne.
ECM 500mb at 72 hrs shows the flatter upper pattern but note the energy pushing into WA-OR.
What we’re seeing now, we do all over again by Sunday into early next week.
500mb at 96 hrs.
This next trough looks to draw on colder air out of Canada which drives down the Rockies and with a storm developing to the lee of the Rockies, look out for significant snowfall with Denver potentially picking up a couple of inches.
Check out these 850 temps at 96 hrs (Sun)
120 hrs (Mon)
Surface at 120 hrs. Need to watch for severe weather on the Plains while heavy snows hit the Rockies.
ECM snow chart through 120 hrs.
While NYC doesn’t hit 80 with this week’s surge, it looks like we should with the next.
Monday morning lows look record cold in the West!
Here comes the first 80s of the year for NYC!
