+NAO To Return Shifting Trough/Ridge Axis Westwards Over Europe…

Written by on April 7, 2014 in Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

The NAO is currently negative but is poised to go back positive by the weekend. As a result our trough that will keep the April showers and more organised rain going across Ireland, the UK and western mainland this week, should back west out over the Atlantic by the weekend. As this happens, ridging and warmth now dominating France, Spain and the Med basin will build north bringing spring sunshine and warmth back to the UK Saturday if not Sunday.

The current negative NAO is supporting blizzard conditions today over Greenland with mild temps. Of course -23C is mild by Summit Camp’s standards.

With the trough deepening over Greenland and the North Atlantic this weekend, expect colder and more settled conditions to re-establish once again over Greenland.

Here’s the GFS surface this upcoming Sunday.

The high should hold, although the GFS operational weakens the northern flank into early next week bringing more cloud and some rain to northern Scotland.

The high holds firm with core directly over the UK next Tuesday but the model has a more ominous front approaching from the west.

By next Wednesday, that front is seen to burst the high pressure bubble.

ECMWF has the ridge holding although the front is nearing!

Today through Friday will be dominated by sun and April showers with the focus being in the N and W of the UK, always drier, brighter further S and E. Looking good across France up through the Low Countries and into Denmark but this weekend sees the ridge returning, extending north from Iberia where it’s going to be summer-like there this week. Big shift from last week

The ridge holds into early and possibly mid next week. Beyond that?  well the CFSv2 has a strong positive directly over the UK week 2 with a weakening week 3 and 4 but still shows a positive NAO signal.

GFS ensembles keeps core of ridge SOUTH of the UK over Spain and France next 16 days.
