Warm Summers Weekend Across Majority of UK, Stiff SE Wind Keeps North Sea Coast Cool

The above satellite image shows beautifully the ridge of high pressure currently controlling the Western Europe’s airspace. Note what appears to be grey, high level clouds over the Sahara and up into southern and central Spain. This in fact is the intense heat which the satalitte is picking up on and not a cloud is in the sky here.

The warmth is certainly tempered between southern Spain and the UK but with plenty of sunshine and strong enough heights and warm enough 850 temps, surface temperatures have been allowed to warm to as high as 79 yesterday at Eskdalemuir in southern Scotland and near 80 too in Greater Manchester. The UK warm spot yesterday was a very pleasant 81 (27.3C) at Northolt. This is a pleasant air mass rather than oppressive and uncomfortable. Nights aren’t stiffling like they can be.

Here’s a glance at the highs achieved yesterday.

Today will see the slightly more eastward progress on an Atlantic low which spins away to the SW of Ireland. This is bending the ridge and although sunshine will be in abundance again for the majority of the UK, winds are picking up from the SE. This means temperatures will be cooler nearer the Channel and North Sea with winds likely to increase through this afternoon as the land heats and onshore winds increase.

Low clouds, mist and fog may also be slow to clear from the east coast but once inland and sheltered, temperatures should warm nicely.

Today temperature profile is such.

Immediate North Sea coastal communities should see noon or early pm clearing, stiff onshoire breeze and high near 18-20C.

Inland areas should be sunny, breezy with high between 20-23C.

Western areas, particularly sheltered with hills to the east or south should warm to between 23-26C with potential for some downsloping which could boost temperatures to 27 or 28C.

Warmest areas of the UK towards will be western areas of the Midlands, Greater Manchester which lies just east of the Pennines, western Lancashire, Cumbria, Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire, Argyll up through the West and Northwest Highlands. We may see an odd spot in the NW Highlands such as Kinlochewe reach 28C.
