TODAY’S HIGH’S: KINLOCHEWE 28.7C, 28.1C AT AVIEMORE, 26.9C AT PRESTWICK
Today marked the warmest of the past four days of unseasonably warm temperatures courtesy of a strong upper level ridge of high pressure firmly anchored over the British Isles.
An easterly wind brought a two-way change in the temperature profile from west to east today as the east coast saw cooler temperatures compared with yesterday and the previous day while in centralk and particularly western areas, even right to the coast, the air was even warmer than previously seen.
THE VERY SAME EAST WIND TODAY BROUGHT BOTH COOLING AND WARMING DEPENDING UPN WHERE YOU WHERE
The east coast experienced the natural air conditioning of the North Sea with winds cooling as they travelled over the cool waters, this kept the coast nice and refreshing with Edinburgh peaking at only 18C (64F) but as this same air flow crossed the warming land, so those winds lost most of their cooling influence by the time they reached the west. In fact once these very winds met and crossed the hills and mountains of central and western Scotland, so they enhanced the warming of the air. As these easterly winds cross summits, they descend down the west face and as they do so, they dry the air out and heat the air as they descend due to compression. So while temperatures in the west may have been warming towards 24 or 25C, the 27C+ was likely caused by not only a heating of the land produced by blazing sunshine and no cloudcover and strong strong sinking but by downsloping winds.
