Cold Firmly Established Over UK, Snow Next?

The next few days looks very interesting and yet complex too as the cold air grows stronger over the UK with temps properly cooling to levels that could be considered cold. Well, by our standards anyway.

While the core of cold transfers from southeast Europe up into the Baltics and southern Scandinavia, the overall cold pool continues to hold firm across practically all of our contininent. This cold is not too dissimilar to December 2010, although the UK isn’t in the same ballpark. Not as cold nor do we have widespread snowcover.

While tonight will be another cold one, especially across the Midlands into Wales where temps may approach -10C or even lower, it’s all eyes on an approaching front that will try and take a run at the UK on Saturday from off the Atlantic.

Big questions remain.. Does it turn milder, rainy or does the cold stand firm, leaving us dry or snowy?

My issue is, I don’t believe the models see the low level cold air and I believe that from last night through till Saturday morning, the stagnant, dense, low level cold air will mean either the front gets held back further west than many forecasters think, or it will draw milder, moister air over top of this cold air, bringing an increased snow risk.

In my opinion, while the BBC appears to have more rain than snow over Scotland and a greater chance of snow further south and east, I believe, the air over Scotland, like further south, will be colder and therefore any moisture which makes it inland, will fall as rain.

Stay tuned on this developing story. More tomorrow..
