Today’s Weather Headlines
Late season UK Heatwave drawing to a close today, replaced be a turbulent week of weather and much cooler end
Push of chilly air will bring a seasonal reality check to all of the UK from Wednesday onwards as we see a much more October-like pattern arrive hot on the heels of the hottest start to an October in UK history. This rapid arrival of autumn is made more extreme because of how extreme the recent warmth has been. We’re likely to see hill top snows over the Scottish Highlands, cold winds northwesterlies and below normal temperatures, but keep in mind, this is October and this can often be a stormy transitional time of year from summer to winter, bringing wild temperature swings and stormy weather.
It looks like our next deep Atlantic low will be associated with the remnants of once powerful Hurricane Ophelia, however, like we saw with the remnant low of Katia, this won’t be a hurricane and in fact isn’t now as to speeds off Newfoundland. Many UK media sources like to make us think we’re getting hit by the so called strangely termed ‘tail end’ of a hurricane and that is not the case. If the original low makes it’s way across the North Atlantic as a cold core low pressure system and deepens like we saw with Katia, then we could be in for a significant wind event late this week, however it appears a piece of it’s existing energy (Ophelia) will be attached within a series of embedded lows attached to a rip-roaring Atlantic jet stream crossing Britain and this may make it be hard to notice that’s this is the effects of once Hurricane Ophelia since it’s going to be pretty storm throughout much of this week anyway across Scotland. It would be on the rear of this system which passes Wednesday-Thursday which would pull much colder air down from the north and would present us with snow over the Highlands, perhaps even blizzard conditions, highs only in the 40s (6-8C across Scotland, low 50s (11-13C) for England.
