northeast & mid-atlantic
Tuesday should be a better day throughout the Northeast with sun more the rule than showers and storms, however the only trouble spot tomorrow may be around the Richmond to Baltimore corridor but further north should be mostly sunny throughout the day. Of course as always these days, it will be hot and humid with highs pushing 85 up in Boston, 93 in New York City and though storms are likely to blowup late in the afternoon, this shouldn’t stop temps warming to a very hot, steamy 97 or even 98 in DC! Lows tonight won’t drop below 75 for the big cities with perhaps some spots struggling to drop belkow 80.
southeast & florida
A torrid summer afternoon is in store with the thunderstorm threat reduced to under 20% for most today and it’s all down to blistering sunshine and building heat throughout the Southeast today, tired of the summer heat and humidity yet? Highs today in New Orleans will warm to 88 with thunderstorms possible, if any, confined to nearer the Gulf where land heating and sea breezes can ignite PM storms. Inland where there’s little in the way of clouds, it will reach a toasty 95 in Atlanta, 95 in Memphis, 96 in Charlotte and a scorching 98 in Norfolk, Va. Even throughout Florida, as the atmosphere is capped and the high builds, it’s going to heat into the mid to even upper 90s in places, particularly inland locations. Drier air is crossing Florida, capping the atmosphere and supressing t-storm development. There is likely cooling breezes along the coast but these will likely not produce storms. Lows throughout will merely cool to the 75 to 81 degree level tonight!
southern plains
Once again along the Gulf Coast, including the Greater Houston area, thunderstorms are possible with a moist, southerly flow and highs likely restricted to increasing clouds and storm by mid-afternoon, highs are likely to range from 88 at the beach in Galveston to around 92 in Downtown Houston. However, well inland from the Texas coast and north of Houston, pretty much all of Texas as well as into Oklahoma will be sunny and dry, storm chances dwindle and there will likely be highs around 96 at Dallas, 92 over in San Antonio and 90 to the north in Lubbock and up in Oklahoma City, around 95 degrees. Lows tonight will drop to the mid to upper 70s throughout the southern plains states.
northern plains
Today the northern tier will see a fairly decent day with scattered pockets of shower and thunderstorm activity which has been off and on, running in a SE direction throughout the early morning hours from the Dakotas into Minnesota and southeastward into Illinois. It will be a plesantly warm, though slightly muggy day with a high in Minot, ND of around 78, Minneapolis 85, Chicago 83 and where it’s downright hot and oppressive in the usual suspect location of the mid-Mississippi valley with mid-90s and 70 degree dew points from Kansas City to St Louis, the air there will feel like between 100-108 this afternoon with a chance of thunderstorms erupting after noon. Lows tonight as always runs from the 50s in the Dakotas, low 60s in rural areas of Minnesota & Wisconsin to near 70 in urban areas such as Minneapolis and Chicago. St Louis to Kansas City may be lucky to drop below 80 tonight.
southwest
Though it’s still very hot, highs will fall a few degrees today from yesterday in Las Vegas from 113 yesterday to near 110 today, whilst Pheonix actually rises from 110 yesterday to 112 today! Death Valley’s may fall, like Vegas will from 123 yesterday to nearer 120 perhaps today… As for coastal California, it’s going to continue cooling with a thicker marine layer in place and the thicker the marine layer, the tougher time the sun has burning it off, particularly when the land heating energy decreases slightly on the other side of the coast range. Los Angeles will likely see a cool morning with low down near 60 with a heavy stratus deck covering the basin and lapped up against the mountains, burn off will commence by mid-morning, giving way to party to mostly sunny skies by noon, breezes will increase out of the NW , holding temps to around 77 Downtown this afternoon.
northwest
A beautiful day across the PNW and what a catchup mother nature has had after a record cool and unsettled spring throughout the PNW. Highs today should top near 80 in Seattle, upper 80s in Portland, whilst the mountains will be in the comfortable low to mid-60s. East of the Cascades and it’s all about the low to mid-90s with even a few typical hot spots in eastern WA and OR may touch 100 this afternoon. Lows range from 50s at the coast upper 30s to mid-40s in the mountains and 60s to the east of the mountains.

TODAY’S 80s THE LAST FOR ENGLAND THIS WEEK!

Powerful rains have blasted central parts of England with pockets peppering Scotland as a surge of warmth rushes northbound ahead of a new front that will reveal the next weather maker for the entire UK as the trough sweeps in from the North Atlantic bringing  a fresh batch of very unsettled and at times turbulent weather. A little surface warming and energy soon ignites, raising the excellerate rate of atmospheric lift and this creates embedded thunderstorms. Throughout this week as highs, though cooler, but still warm will be aided by muggy southern air trying to push it’s way north. The incoming cool, maritime air from the NW aloft will create thundery downpours through the remainder of this workweek. Thunderstorms are most likely in central and southern England where the dynamics are a little more favorable as warmth at the surface in the mid-70s will allow greater lift, raising the profile in which clouds vertically build into the colder, higher levels of the atmosphere thanks to the heating of the surface below. In Scotland, though it will be unsettled, temps a little cooler (upper 60s) may still produce some thundery downpours but likely won’t have the same potential as further south.

Set-ups such as these tend to favour southern portions of the UK where the air is naturally warmer, closer by. London as stated many times already this season, tends to always be able to tap the warmer, humid, continental air much easier than say in Glasgow where it’s easier to tap the cooler air and troughiness like has been the case. It’s hard for us here in Scotland to imagine that London continues to enjoy a warm and dry summer with regular highs in the mid to upper 80s…
