Yesterday saw Minneapolis stay below 0F for the first time in 4 years with a high of -2, set just 20 minutes after midnight. By 9am, the temperature had dropped to -10F, the coldest so far this winter but during the day the warm-up was slow with a rise to only -3 before a gradual fall. So far this morning, the temperature sits at -11F which makes for the new, coldest low of winter. The high today will warm to a few degree on the plus side of 0. A wind made it feel close to -30F yesterday morning.

It was cold in a snowless Windy City yesterday with a high of only 11 degrees but it felt subzero all day. This morning, the temperature at O’Hare International Airport has dipped to at least -1F with a wind chill of -17. The low may creep a little lower just before or after sunrise. This makes for the first subzero low in 2 years as there was no subzero low last winter. This reading is quite impressive given the bare ground, this shows you the level of cold within the trough currently dominating the region. Highs today will stay frigid at around 8 degrees, lows tonight dip to around 1 or 2 degrees as the cold core slides into the East.

Up in Fargo, ND, a high yesterday of -4F marks the first subzero high since February 25, 2011. A full 697 days with highs above zero. This has only happened on 9 other occations since 1881 but falls short of the all-time longest streak without a subzero high which was 719 days between January 1991 to December 1992 according to WDAY-TV.

Yesterday’s coldest low was up in Babbit, MN where the temperature sank to -29F. While cold, this is pretty typical during the coldest spell of any winter. This morning, it’s below -30 in some spots within the Arrowhead of Minnesota. Langdon, ND has fallen to at least -27.

Here is yesterday’s daytime maximum temperatures according to The Weather Channel.

As you can see from the above graphic, it’s a cold start throughout the I-95 corridor with widespread upper teens. This marks the coldest so far for the region and for those who don’t like it cold, unfortunately this is nothing compared to the next few nights.

Highs today range from the low to mid-20s with wind chills likely holding in single digits thanks to a brisk northwest wind.

Tonight will dip into the low teens up and down I-95 with single digits away from towns and cities and for highs tomorrow, some locales, including the Big Cities may struggle to get much above 20 degrees.

Wednesday night looks coldest but following a snowstorm on Friday across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, the coldest night may be yet to come, Saturday night looks coldest of all with lows even in the cities perhaps dropping into the single digits. See last night’s post for details.

Will have long range ideas for February coming up later today. Stay tuned.
