My Prediction

With EL NINO developing at the rate it is with frequent and strong WWB’s, the background warming and warmer waters surrounding our continent, there is arguably more heat within our atmosphere and this significantly increases the chances of a warm or very warm summer ahead. Rainfall is a different matter as warmer atmosphere can hold more moisture increasing flash flood risk, especially Alps & Southern Europe, even UK.

Warmer atmosphere & rapid drying out of soils I think elevates chances for a sprawling, stronger than normal high pressure cell to develop and likely dominate much of central Europe this summer.

This ‘dominant high’ will move around, expand and contract and the cause of this? A semi-permanent Atlantic trough positioned near and at times over Ireland & UK. The push and pull of Atlantic trough/Euro heat dome brings of risk of high variability and extremes from heat to severe storms and even significant flood, perhaps some unusually cool, rainy days too? May has shown what our warmer atmosphere is capable of…

The high pressure (in the mean) possibly positioned between N Italy and Baltic Sea presents a ‘ring of fire’ type setup through the Mediterranean and Southern Europe, a frequent battle between heat, maybe high heat with storm & flood.

A trough never too far away from Northwest UK/Ireland will likely bring another battle this summer, though more of a maritime flavour compared to continent. A battle between high heat off Europe and cool, wet off the Atlantic. The Northwest UK is likely more influenced by lower pressure (cool, wet) while Southeast more by higher pressure (warm to at time hot & dry).

Except for coastal Norway, possibly Iceland, Scotland, N Ire, Rep of Ireland and east-central Spain (Average to slightly BELOW Average temps )… I expect ALL of the rest of Europe to be WARMER-THAN NORMAL for the upcoming June-August period.

There’s a chance for WETTER than normal across Southern (parts of Iberia to Italy), Far Western (Ire, Scot, poss N Eng) & coastal Northern Europe.

WHAT HAPPENED?

The below chart is far from perfect but I think it shows relatively well the overall setup we observed through summer 2026 as a whole.

MET OFFICE: Summer 2026 provisionally hottest on record for the UK

An average mean temperature of 16.5°C puts this summer as provisionally the warmest on record, as well as the warmest season for the UK in a series which goes back to 1884.

It was also one of the sunniest summers on record (dating back to 1910) for some places, with the season being very dry for many, though late season rain helped steer places away from seasonal rainfall records.

Dr Amy Doherty, who leads the National Climate Information Centre at the Met Office said: “The conditions we’ve seen this summer have broken UK climate records once again. These records are now breaking with increasing frequency, reflecting the influence of human-induced climate change on the temperatures we’re experiencing in the UK.

“Particularly notable is how much we’ve exceeded the previous summer mean temperature record, set just last year. The figures also knock the infamous summer of 1976 down to seventh for average summer mean temperature, with the top five warmest summers all occurring since 2003.”

Summer 2026 into the record books

Warmth was never far from the headlines this summer, which followed on the heels of a notable record-breaking heatwave in late spring.

The UK started meteorological summer with the second warmest June on record, swiftly followed by the second warmest July.

While late-August unsettled weather helped ease the temperature figures for that month, the consistency of the warmth through the season has resulted in a new UK summer mean temperature record provisionally being set.

England, Wales and Northern Ireland also broke their respective mean temperature records for summer, while Scotland reported its joint-sixth warmest summer on record.

The five warmest UK summers on record are now:   

• 2026: 16.5°C
• 2025: 16.1°C  
• 2018: 15.7°C  
• 2006: 15.7°C  
• 2003: 15.7°C  

The infamous summer of 1976 now sits as the seventh warmest on record with respect to mean temperature.

If you look solely at average daytime maximum temperatures through the season, 2026 is also the warmest on record, surpassing the record set in 1976.

Daily temperatures peaked in the season at 38.1°C at Kew Gardens on 13 August, though it was Lingwood in Norfolk that set a new daily temperature record for the month of June when it reached 38.0°C. In total 54 Met Office weather stations broke their all-time daily maximum temperature record this summer.

Dry season and drought for some

Despite the late-season rain and thunderstorms for some, it did little to make a dent in the overall dryness of summer compared to average.

The UK’s third driest July on record – with England seeing its driest July on record – was notable, but late August rainfall has pushed summer rainfall totals away from any national records, though rainfall amounts do remain below average.

High pressure brought sunshine for many

With high pressure helping to develop the warmth of recent months, sunshine has also been in abundance for many areas.

The UK had its sixth sunniest summer on record, with 621.9 hours of sunshine. England and Wales had their respective second sunniest summers on record. Scotland, however, had closer to its average amount of sunshine.

A UK weather station recorded more than 400 hours of sunshine in a calendar month for the first time when Preston Cove House recorded 409.2hrs in July 2026.

St Athan in South Glamorgan set a new Welsh monthly sunshine record with 360.6hrs.

MY SUMMATION OF PREDICTION vs ACTUAL

When closely analysing both graphics for before and after and the finer details of temperature and rainfall, there are some stand out points to make.

The ‘heat & drought’ over the heart of Europe was a good call and mention of heatwaves and dry conditions extending into the southern UK was another.

The greatest downfall in my prediction was the forecast of a ‘cooler & wetter’ N & W UK/Ireland. While wetter than normal W/NW Scotland, it was quite a bit warmer here while both N Ireland and the rest of Ireland was both warmer and drier which lowers the score a good bit. The core of ridging in the mean was closer to the UK and parked over France pushing back Atlantic influence more. I thought there would’ve been more back and fourth between Euro high and Atlantic trough.

The above negative pushes 2026’s accuracy firmly behind the good summers of 2024 and 2025.

Another factor which needs consideration though less important (to a degree) was the individual monthly breakdown which didn’t play out well beyond mid-July. July overall was far warmer and drier than expected. The month-by-month breakdowns is much more guesswork going further out in time.

The take home is the overall synoptics and highlights of what kind of temperature and rainfall overall was expected, as well as extremity.

That all being said, I am pleased overall with the correct prediction from SE UK into the heart of Europe regarding frequent heatwaves, record temperature and expanding and severe drought conditions.

Sryan Bruen 13/8: Casement casually set a new August record for Dublin yesterday with 31.2C beating Glasnevin’s 31.0C from 1990.

Phoenix Park had 30.9C, a new all-time August record for the station. Records began there in 1881.

Met4Cast – UK Weather 13/8: It really is remarkable that we’ve seen 35°C reached in 4 consecutive months, May, June, July, August, the previous record was 2.

We’ve also now beaten 1995 for most days >30°C ever recorded.

Today marks the 9th day this summer where temperatures have reached 35°C, previous record was 5.

No other year since records began matches summer 2026.

Met Office 14/8:

Temperatures provisionally reached 38.1°C at Kew Gardens, making it the hottest day of the year so far

This is the second time this year we have reached 38°C. The only other time this has happened twice in one year was in 2022.

It also makes it the 5th hottest day on record.

Sryan Bruen 15/8: I counted the UK having 17 tropical nights in 2026 to date based on synop data. By far and away the most in any calendar year on record.

Sryan Bruen 15/8: This will change significantly but the first 13 days averaged a mean max of 26.3C in Central England, an anomaly of 6.2C above the 61-90 average. This immediately following July which had an anomaly of 5.3C above average. Stupid. Just stupid anomalies.
