Another Snow System For South While Conditions Improve Over Scotland

Written by on January 22, 2013 in United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

The latest system to push into the cold dome sitting over the UK will bring a fresh covering of snow to southwest and parts of south-central England today. This occurs while more northern parts from northern England up into Scotland get a break following a rough past 36 to 48 hours.

For you folks in the South, you know the drill by now, tricky driving conditions, poor visibility and cold will be the theme of the day. While the immediate coast see rain, expect a fresh 1-2 inches of snow over inland parts of the Southwest extending east, northeast into south-central parts, perhaps clipping the far south Midlands. Over higher ground we could see locally 4 or 5 inches from this.

Fresh to strong winds will accompany this system making it feel very raw as highs only reach 0 or -1C.

As you likely aware by now, warmer weather is set to return but before this arrives, we are likely to see colder nights, especially where skies clear more and where snow remains deep. More snow is also likely later this week as a push of mild, Atlantic air tries to start the eroding process of this stubborn and stagmant cold air.

Here’s the GFS forecasted low temperatures for Thursday night. Note the dark purples indicating lows down towards 10F with parts of England eyeing 3-6F or -4 to -16C with a bulls eye centred over south-central Wales which pushes 0F or -18C. More often than not when you’ve got this type of pattern with such a wide extent of snow covering Britain, the coldest nights of winter come, just before a warm-up that breaks the cold pattern because a high settles overhead just prior to a warm Atlantic system moving in from the southwest.

More to come on the rest of this week, the weekend and even next week across the UK and Europe in a post later, stay tuned!
