MANY PARTS OF EUROPE COVERED BY SNOW NOW INCLUDING THE MAJOR CENTERS OF LONDON, PARIS, BERLIN, WARSAW AN OTHERS
From Paris to Berlin and across Europe we have seen winter hit and hit hard. The pattern has delivered and the cold air is likely to intensify as snow cover radiates all the surface warmth back to space, Days will grow colder as any sunshine will bounce off snowcover and this will mean days remaining below freezing for many areas over this weekend. Today the snow is hitting and has hit the southeast of Britain hardest where 2-10 inches has fallen across parts of Sussex, Essex, Kent Suffolk and other counties including the Greater London area where highs will struggle to warm to above freezing. Along the east coast winds of 20-50 mph combined with highs barely hitting 0-2C will feel more like the low 20s and even as cold as the mid-teens over higher ground, places like the Yorkshire moors, snow cover, andf exposure to a raw wind blowing straight off the cold continent might bring some of the coldest windchills anywhere in Britain today, I believe the coldest parts tonight will be around Oxfordshire or Kent where if winds lighten up and with deep snow of 12 inches and clear skies with Arctic air in place, we could see a -12 to -14C tonight outside of the urban heat of Greater London, somewhere like Benson or Abingdon in Oxfordshire could be a contender for readings such as those by tomorrow morning…

HERE AT MY HOUSE IN LENNOXTOWN, WE DIDN’T SEE A PARTICULARLY COLD NIGHT IN TERMS OF NUMBERS, BUT THE AIR “FEELS” MUCH COLDER THAN EVEN THE MORNING AT WHICH WILL DROPPED DOWN TO 23 DEGREES. BECAUSE THE AIR MASS NOW IN PLACE IS OF DEEP CONTINENTAL ORIGIN, IT ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE THE COLD GOES RIGHT THROUGH YOU…A LIGHT BREEZE FROM THE EAST AND 28 DEGREE AIR FEELS PRETTY CRISP, WIND CHILLS WHERE AROUND 22-23 EARLIER THIS MORNING, NOT ALL THAT IMPRESSIVE BY ANY MEANS BUT WHEN IT’S AIR BLOWING FROM RUSSIA, IT CERTAINLY FEELS COLDER AND DRY. THE WIND ITSELF AND PATCHY CLOUDS KEPT OUR AIR HERE A LITTLE MILDER OVERNIGHT BUT IF WE MANAGE TO GET A FEW INCHES DOWN ACROSS MOST OF THE BRITISH ISLES AND THE ARCTIC AIR SETTLES, ALLOWING WINDS TO CALM AND SKIES TO CLEAR OUT, WE HAVE A GOOD CHANCE OF HITTING THE LOWEST NUMBERS IN THE PAST 10 YEARS AROUND THESE PARTS. I PREDICT A POTENTIAL LOW DOWN TO 15 DEGREES IF THOSE CONDITIONS COME TOGETHER, SAY SUN-MON NIGHT….
