Temperatures soared past 110 degrees in several cites across Western Australia Thursday. The heat will expand to reach most of the country over the next few days.
A high of 111 degrees was recorded in Learmonth, which is right at the coast. Farther inland, Nullagine reached 113 degrees. Wednesday, Marble Bar topped out at 114 degrees. These temperatures were the hottest in the globe.
The heat will expand into the Northern Territories, Queensland, South Australia, and New South Wales. Temperatures will top 110 degrees on a daily basis for the next week across parts of these states.
Extreme heat led to fires across Victoria and New South Wales in recent weeks. Towns near Sydney and Melbourne had major problems from the fires. However, the current heat wave is not expected to reach areas near these cities.
Temperatures could reach as high as 120 degrees in central parts of the country over the next few days. These temperatures will be the hottest in Australia so far this season.
