>British Isles gets battered by first Gales of the year

>The Northern UK is under siege by a deep area of low pressure that’s crossing over far northern Scotland. Even here in what I would classify as a more sheltered inland location, gusts are topping 40-50 mph, which is making for a roaring sound every 10 seconds or so up here in my attic office. There are areas along the coast and over higher ground where gusts to between 60-80 mph are wrecking havoc on the roads, on the seas and indeed the trees which many still have their leaves on them. A gust to 74 mph was the highest reported so far by the Met Office at Glen Ogle. It’s likely as this storm center moves east, winds will remain strong with severe gales occuring even in the populated Central Belt of Scotland between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

I would expect with this tightly packed, well formed area of low pressure that is supporting these winds that somewhere like Cairngorm Mountain will see a gust surpass 100 mph. This location, high up and highly exposed, often experiences 100 + mph winds when strong Atlantic Depressions cross the northern half of the country.

Northern parts of England as well as Ireland are experiencing gales today with many areas under sever gale conditions. This of course being the first true windstorm of the autumn.

Thanks for reading.
