While my recent posts have been focusing on the US with all the snow now settling into the Northeast, back here in the UK and we too have snow on the way with disruption likely during Sunday into Monday morning’s rushhour. The current cold pattern which has been pretty moderate over the past day or so will deepen […]
[warning] EXPECTED SNOW TOTALS: PORTLAND, ME 23-26″, BOSTON, MA 24-28″, PROVIDENCE, RI 24-25″, HARTFORD, CT 23-26″, NEW YORK, NY 12-18″, PHILADELPHIA, PA 1-4″ [/warning] Northeast: Playground For Extreme Weather Geography plays a huge role in making the Northeastern US a wild place to live sometimes. The climate is classified as MARITIME CONTINENTAL. Despite being situated right on the Atlantic Ocean, temperatures can […]
We have a weather situation evolving over the Lower 48 which is likely to bring an historic blizzard to the Northeast. It’s a textbook scenario with arctic air over southeast Canada drifting into the Northeast US while two branches of the jet stream are active with both northern and southern branches having a storm which will converge. The first, riding the northern branch across […]
I’m sure you’ll have noticed that wind out there today, feeling particularly raw that’s for sure. Although the air temperatures wasn’t that bad, it was the sting in the north wind which made it feel quite bitter. We have a direct discharge straight from the arctic. This flow tends to be fairly moisture starved and so […]
There are two systems the models are picking up on over the next 3-6 days, both of which remain out over the Pacific ocean right now but as the pattern shifts towards late week with a trough returning to the West, so these storm ride in on a strong Pacific jet. These systems will bring big snows […]
It sure has been a rough past 24 hours across Britain with 100+mph winds, 65+ft waves recorded off the Outer Hebrides as well as widepsread and disruptive snow with blizzard conditions in places. During the overnight much of Scotland recieved anywhere from a dusting to as much as 2-4 inches of snow with higher amounts over the hills. The […]
A strong jet tearing across the Pacific, like we’ve seen here in the UK, will once again alter the upper level pattern across the Lower 48 once again by late week, the next major winter storm will bring more big snows to the Intermountain West including Salt Lake City and Denver where it has been mild over the […]
As forecast, severe winter weather is hammering Scotland full force today with gale or severe-gale force winds. In a comment early this morning, I wrote on facebook that ‘this is no ordinary westerly wind’, of course this is a wind direction not normally associated with cold and snow, however thanks to a series of meteorological circumstances coming together, a powerful gale is driving air straight from Greenland across to Scotland. […]
