First Noticeable Cold Front Sweeps UK Bringing 1st Hill Snow

Written by on October 24, 2015 in Autumn 2015, Rest of Europe, United Kingdom & Ireland with 0 Comments

The first of many noticeable cold fronts is currently pushing SE over the UK leading to a noteworthy dip in temperature. This active frontal boundary brought a fair amount of wind and rain overnight, fuelled by a decent air mass contrast. Ahead of it, mild, Mediterranean source air, behind it was ocean-modified Greenland air. Nothing unusual for the time of year of course.

What always makes it more noticeable is when you got temps 13-15C at 11 or midnight and it turns brighter with sun returning later in the day but it’s distinctly colder feel at 8-11C but feeling even cooler in the westerly wind.

Interestingly I drove past Aviemore with Cairngorm in the background around 11.30pm last night and my dash read 12C. This was Cairngorm this morning!

With much cooler air in place, expect a fairly widespread rural frost tonight across inland southern parts. Breeze keeps it less cold further north but will ‘feel’ colder!

Into early next week and we’ve a territorial battle between Atlantic low and Europe high. Certainly Monday and Tuesday it looks like the high to the east wins the battle, shielding at least the central and eastern UK from wet weather but towards midweek there’s more uncertainly with potential for the rain bearing front reaching eastern areas or perhaps remains held further west. Winds will increase from a mild southerly direction and don’t be surprised if we see unusually mild air by late October standards next week. Much of western and central Europe will enjoy the benefits of the high overhead.
