This was Sep.

Yesterday’s departures were impressive.

An unusually cold and strong upper flow drove by far the coldest air of the season south and with 5k temps between -5 and -15C, instability snow showers developed, tracking NW to SE across much of the Northeast air space yesterday.

GFS trajectory of where this air has originated.

This is a very winter-like visible satellite view from yesterday with instability clouds blowing out of the NW out over the ocean.

The air was cold enough to produce the classic lake effect snow bands with up to 9 inches of snow falling over the Tug Hill Plateau of New York.

Strong instability within the abnormally cold NW flow helped generated hefty snow showers across much of Maine yesterday.

Directly beneath the centre, that’s where the lightest winds and possibly the coldest temps will be. Low teens can’t be ruled out over the mountains of West Virginia.

Warming trend is on the way but interestingly the GFS ensemble isn’t particularly impressive.

The ECMWF is certainly more impressive. Just look at the flip within 24 hours over the Northeast!
