Moscow Sees First Snow Of Season, Another Settled Spell Across North, Stormy South!

Along with the first push of Arctic/Siberian air into northeast Europe came the first snows of the season to cities such as Moscow and surrounding region. This snow coverage expands westward into the weekend.

All thanks to this air mass… That’s a chilly 5 day mean temp anomaly.

Following 5 days sees it reach the UK in a somewhat modified fashion.

Modelling prints out a decent amount of snow by early October standards stretching as far west and eastern Germany through the next week to 10 days. Notice the GFS pretty much covers Poland, the very region which suffered deadly heat this past summer.

As the high becomes better established across Scandinavia, so this cold air sweeps westwards underneath. This will be a rude awakening following a long, hot and dry summer.

As expected, this building Scandinavian high is the dominant driver with JOAQUIN forced south into Iberia while it’s eastern flank pulls in the first significant cold shot of the season. Looks like this system also provides the UK with largely settled conditions. Pleasant by day, frosty by night.

Spain and Portugal aren’t the only ones set to suffer stormy conditions. A nasty low also spins up over the Central Mediterranean.

Another split jet means two corridors of heavy precip, one heading north of UK and the other, likely more potent crossing the warm Mediterranean.

GFS 2m night temps today through mid next week. Notice how the below-freezing air progresses east eventually reaching the UK.
