As pointed out in recent days, we’ve got the chilliest air flow driving south over the UK in several months and it sure is a shock to the system following a mild May, June and July. While chilly with frost and even hill snow across parts of the North as well as Iceland, Scandinavia and the Alps, this ISN’T completely out of the ordinary but more a sign of change. Noticed any leaves turning brown? I’ve seen plenty and I’ve also heard that leaves turning early can be a sign of a tough winter.

All thanks to the latest (fairly) deep low for the time of year, in this, our new trough pattern, strong northerly winds are driving late summer arctic air south as seen by the 06z GFS surface map below.

Highs struggle to reach 10C widely over Highland Scotland.
2m temps mid afternoon tomorrow off GFS.

The model has 15C or lower across bulk of Northern Britain, factor in stiff N breeze and it’s feeling distinctly autumnal. Several Highland villages are likely to struggle getting above 6-8C with showers likely falling as snow over higher peaks.
Check out Tuesday AM. Large area at or below 5C. Rural spots perhaps dipping to frost level even in the M8 corridor. Impressive for mid-August but I recall this happening 3 or 4 years back.

As we head into mid week, winds ease as high pressure builds over Ireland and the UK while cold N winds blow over Scandinavia, Denmark and western mainland.
