Winter Hangover Spoiling Summer 2014 For N Plains & Midwest?

The winter hangover continues with effects lingering despite us approaching the midway point of summer 2014.

The very setup which brought the coldest US winter since 1996 remains, making for a cool summer of 2014.

Abnormally warm water which led to the strong positive over the northeast Pacific continues to send the mean trough into the Central and Eastern US.

An added boost to the summer chill, especially over the Upper Midwest is the amount of ice remaining on Hudson Bay!

All that ice helps cool at the atmosphere and winds above it and with cool air masses frequently dropping south, this is making for a rather cool summer in areas down wind.

The Eastern Seaboard temperatures are holding up thanks to abnormally warm water hugging the coast.

Modelling strongly hints at a reinforcing cool shot driving south into the heart of the US next week with an almost summertime version of the polar vortex!

Check out the trough the ECMWF has dropping into the Great Lakes next week.

Marquette, MI, located on the southern shore of Lake Superior saw ice linger on their shores into June and yesterday they endured a record low high of just 57 degrees.

No real surprise given the trough overhead and still very cold water.

Average only 44.48F across Superior with large areas away from shore still in the 30s…

CFSv2 looks cool through the next FOUR WEEKS, by the end of this period, kiss good bye to summer as averages begin to drop quite quickly.
