It was a chilly start to the workweek in the Eastern part of the US with record lows galore but the heat which spread across the West and Plains has finally made it across the Appalachians and into the Coastal Plains with upper 80s, low 90s across the Mid-Atlantic.
The cold has been kicked out and for the first time in a long while, there is really no cold air to be had over the Lower 48. Also for the first time this spring, there is no sign of anymore ‘source region arctic air’ likely to return, in other words any trough which drops into the East in coming weeks, SHOULDN’T deliver arctic air but more your typical cool down from the heat that we expect to see at this stage of the year.

Through tonight, expect some isolated thunderstorms to push through the Mid-Atlantic, some may produce gusty winds and hail and elsewhere, Texas will and is seeing some big storms. In fact there are recent twitter reports of 4 inch diameter hail being dropped near the Dallas-Ft Worth area tonight. All in all though, it’s going to be a relatively quiet weather map up until Saturday with just your classic pockets of strong to severe storms, mainly in the Southern Plains.

As I’ve posted in two of the most recent US posts, there is a substantial severe risk looming for the Plains and Midwest this weekend into early next week.
As the next system drives into the Rockies, so the Gulf opens up, heat builds and so too does humidity. It’s the strong jet coming through and crossing a large area of convergence, that we’ll see plenty of big time storms developing. The conditions continue to remain favourable for the first real severe weather outbreak of the spring. See recent posts on the severe potential this weekend which is likely to extend into Monday.
