This weekend is setting up to be a record breaker for both heat and cold thanks to a highly amplified and extreme pattern over North America, sound familiar? Mid-summer level heat will build from Los Angeles through Denver all the way to North Dakota Sunday into Monday with temps back into the 90s for LA and for the first time this year in Denver. 90s look to go all the way to North Dakota and Minnesota Monday and Tuesday. As the heat pump fires on all cylinders, a major trough will dive into the Great Lakes and all the way to the Southeast early next week, setting the stage for potentially one of the coldest May night’s on record as arctic air gets tapped yet again.
That major trough alluded to here for a solid week will drive potentially historic late season arctic air all the way into the Southeast with places as far south as Atlanta eyeing upper 30s by Tuesday morning. Monday morning looks very cold from Ohio to Georgia but Tuesday morning looks even colder with the latest run of the GFS going even colder now than previous runs which have always been cold anyway.
Here’s a look at Monday morning according to the GFS.

Check out the area of low 20s across SW New York, central and western Pennsylvania, western Maryland and West Virginia. The model is even suggesting upper teens for a few spots which would certainly be an all-time record breaker not only locally but perhaps for a state too. The question remains, is the GFS too cold? It’s been persistently showing some crazy cold and after warming slightly, it’s gotten colder again. Interesting.
32-degrees is possible all the way into the Tennessee, North Georgia with upper 20s in the North Carolina mountains.
As for the Big Cities, the latest run shows the 35 degree line very close to Philadelphia and up towards Newark, NJ, again, this would be incredible for mid-May.
Check out the OH Valley Sunday night, we may see widespread rural upper 20s/low 30s.
As for the heat, the GFS has 90s all the way to South Dakota on Monday afternoon while it pushes the 90s into southern and central Minnesota on Tuesday.

Daily record highs and lows are a given from Sunday through Tuesday and while all-time May highs are unlikely to be broken in the West and Plains, nonetheless the warmth will be nothing to sniff at. However the chill in the East may be a different story and could set a new benchmark for May cold. Time will tell.
