Historic May Storm

A large, unusual  and once-in-a-lifetime storm system that’s currently spinning over the heart of the United States and dragging arctic air all the way into Texas will continue to do so over the next few days.

It has already been responsible for producing local and state all-time record snows with 28.2 inches of snow reported in Colorado, 18 inches in both Minnesota and Wisconsin, 14 inches in Iowa and as much as 5 inches in Kansas, with even 5 inches of snow falling in NW ARKANSAS, which has never been witnessed before. Let’s not forget the countless record low maximum and minimum temperatures set from Wisconsin all the way to Lubbock, Texas where this morning, it got down to 27 degrees, the coldest low ever recorded in May.

The system is changing character as it cuts off from the main upper flow and so it will loose the connection with unusual cold over Canada. However that doesn’t mean there’s not more snow to come from this system through the weekend as this will continue to maintain unusually cold core storm beneath the core. It may well snow tonight and Saturday in more unusual places, albeit many will see more of a rain-snow mix will bring a rain-snow mix.

Here are lists of records which have fallen from this storm

Winter Storm Achilles: Historic May Snow

Where further accumulation of snow is possible, try Arkansas and southern Missouri over the next 24 hrs. Below is the GFS snow chart through the next 24 hrs!

Check out these incredible temperatures as of 4.15pm. Mid-30s over southern Missouri on May 3rd is astonishing given the strength of sunshine. It takes a heck of a cold air mass to fight the natural surface heating even with cloud and precipitation at this time of year and those mid-30s go all the way up into Wisconsin.

Below is the departures from normal! There are places between Arkansas and NW Wisconsin which are nearly 40 below normal this afternoon.

Here’s the cold 850mb temperatures off the GFS for late today.. Note the tongue of sub-freezing temps at 5,000ft all the way to central Texas

By Saturday morning you can see (below) the system divorcing from the main flow as it looses the cold connection but that doesn’t mean it warms as you can see.

As stated previously, there is more snow expected to break out tonight possibly as far west and south as Oklahoma, through portions of Arkansas and potentially as far east as Memphis, TN, even into northern Mississippi would you believe, albeit, it won’t stick as the ground is too warm.

Here’s a look at the upper low and energy early in the day Saturday. Note the cold connection from Canada all the way into the South. That’s what allowed temperatures to stay in the 40s all the way to northern Mississippi this afternoon. Today could well have been the coldest May day in northern Mississippi history!

By Sunday you can see the upper low becomes cut off but it’s a very strong, deep upper low which may bring an rare rain-snow mix to parts of the Mid-South.

Finally by Monday, the deep upper low pushes across Alabama, may hold highs in the 40s all the way into central Alabama!!
